Ruff Trail Kennels is located in North Eastern South Dakota, just east of Aberdeen 23 miles in the heart of pheasant country.  We are a small family owned and operated kennel with the goal of producing only the best German Shorthaired Pointers possible. We are not a puppy factory, so there are only a limited amount of quality puppies available per year. 

    We breed our German Shorthaired Pointers for temperament, desire and style.  Our dogs have been used for guided hunts in Northern Minnesota and North Dakota. So not only do our dogs have to hunt for us, but they also have to be good enough for paid hunts.  

    
    
    We sell German Shorthaired Pointer Puppies, started dogs, finished dogs and also have a stud service available.  We have German Shorthairs with all colors such as: Liver/Roan, Solid Liver, Liver/White and occasionally Black\White.
   
     We also have a training program available for a dog you already have or one that you get from us. We believe that there should not be a set standard for training. All of our training is done on a case by case basis, our training program is tailored to your dogs needs as well what you would like to achieve. Depending on what you want your dog is usually with us for 3 weeks to a month for basic commands such as "sit/stay", "come", "here" and "heel". More advanced training usually takes a little longer but each dog is different. We will train any type of dog regardless of age or breed. After training, your dog will work off lead and follow all commands. All of the training is done with fun in mind. A dog will learn a lot faster if the training is enjoyable.     With my family being hunters ourselves, we know what it takes to train a well-rounded and versatile dog.  Our dogs hunt what we hunt. Not only pheasants, but sharped tailed grouse in Minnesota as well as ducks and geese with friends and family.  Our dogs have no problem hunting through December and take to water very well. All of this is done with very stylish points, strong backing and class for a very enjoyable hunt. 

                                


                                

     Training, if done the correct way will result in a dog that is very eager to please, regardless   of the breed or the age of the dog. Notice that all the dogs are in a sit/stay position with the attention on the trainer, not the person taking the picture.
